Low carb cherry chutney is made with dark sweet cherries, tart cranberries and spicy peppers. It’s the perfect blend of sweet, sour and spicy ingredients to accompany pork, duck, ham and even sandwiches.
What is chutney? Chutneys are made with a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. They resemble jam but have the addition of one key ingredient that sets them apart, vinegar.
Chutney originated in India, as far back as 500 BC, as a way of preserving food. Most dishes served in India are accompanied by a chutney.
Chutneys are made to compliment other foods and can be used as a spread, dipping sauce or a condiment.
What you will need:
- 2 cups dark sweet cherries, fresh or frozen
- ½ cup cranberries, fresh or frozen
- 1 garlic clove
- 1 poblano pepper, seeded and membrane removed
- ¼ cup red onion
- 1 jalapeno or serrano, seeded or not, depending on how HOT you want it
- 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice
- Zest and juice of one mandarin orange
- ¼ cup Swerve brown
- 2 tsp real apple cider vinegar
- ¼ tsp kosher salt
- Grapeseed oil or other flavorless oil for sautéing
- Saucepan
- Wooden spoon or heat resistant spatula

Low Carb Cherry Chutney Nutrition
This recipe makes about 1 ½ cups. Each serving approximately contains 26 calories, .2 grams of fat, 4.9 grams of net carbs and .5 grams of protein.
How to make Low Carb Cherry Chutney
Mince the onion, garlic and peppers and sauté in a medium sized saucepan. Cook until the onions are softened, then add salt and spices and cook for two minutes.
Add the cherries and cranberries to the onion mixture, then the zest and juice of one mandarin orange, sweetener and vinegar. Allow to cook down on low heat until thickened, about 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
This chutney will last refrigerated in a sealed container for up to four weeks. It is not safe to preserve in jars and keep on the shelf.
