Hello there,
I am Barbara, creator behind Hunger for Spice which began at the tail-end of 2018. It was a whirl-wind of a start; developing a site with no experience, having poor writing skills, no idea how to use a camera, minimal encounters using social media, generating recipes for a new diet lifestyle and on and on.
I certainly have not mastered any of these skills but the amount I have learned and continue to learn every single day has far exceeded my expectations.
Stepping outside of the Comfort Zone
“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” This is a line from the book, Who Moved My Cheese, by Spencer Johnson. This question has pushed me that one last inch to just go for it, whatever “it” happened to be at the time. It pushed me passed my own self-doubts to create this site. I’ve never regretted trying anything new, whether I failed or soared, I grew.
I finally found “what I want to be when I grown up”, right here in my own little space. I am excited to share this amazing journey with you!
A Little About Me
I grew up in the coldest (and one of the smallest) towns in Oregon. After high-school, I moved to Portland and started spending time with more family members. It was easy to enjoy cooking because it brought my entire family together and left me with many priceless memories.
Eventually pursuing a degree in culinary arts, I fell in love with baking while there.
I felt as though I had found my calling but had to steer away from a career in food while I dealt with a major life change.
Also dealing with chronic pain and fatigue after a significant car accident, I was seeing multiple doctors and receiving treatments. I ended up switching to a gluten free, low carb diet and cut out refined sugar and harmful sweeteners to reduce the inflammation in my body.
Needing to direct my energy into something positive, I began Hunger for Spice. My intentions were to grow and learn, to record and share my recipes and to rebuild myself with new direction.
Aside from cooking and photography, I enjoy gardening, reading fantasy books, being outdoors in nature, and playing card games and being silly with my family.
