Favorite Pies
It’s hard to define what my absolute favorite pie is, who could possibly choose just one? Apple pie is certainly at the top of the list, especially this homemade version with the absolute best spice blend to compliment the sharp tartness of Granny Smith apples.
While apple pie didn’t originate in America, it was one of the first dessert recipes published in an American cookbook, so it makes sense that we associate it with being an American original. This glorious pie originated in England in the late 1300’s and the recipe included a number of fruits, including raisins, figs and pears.
Ingredients you will need:
- 7 ½ cups granny smith apples
- 3 Tablespoons lemon juice

Prepping to make Perfectly Spiced Apple Pie
Make the gluten free pie crust, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate.
Peel, core, quarter and slice the apples 1/4″ and place in a large bowl. Add the lemon juice throughout the chopping process to prevent the apples from browning.
Combine the spices, salt, cornstarch and sweetener together and pour the mixture over the sliced apples. Using a rubber spatula, mix until the apples are evenly coated with the spice blend.
Sprinkle a couple of teaspoons of sweetener in the bottom of the pie dish and set the oven to 350°.
Making Spiced Apple Pie
Divide the pastry dough in half and dust a clean work surface with the gluten free flour. Dust a little flour over the top of the dough. Begin rolling the dough from the center out to the edges. Roll a couple of times, then flip the dough over to help prevent sticking. Continue to roll into a circle until the dough reaches 1/8-inch thickness.
Using a bench scraper or using the rolling pin, gently pick the dough up and place over the pie dish. Transfer the apple mixture into the pastry dough inside of the pie dish.
Roll the remaining dough out and place over the top of the apples or make a lattice top. Crimp the edges of the dough together where it meets the pie dish. If not using a lattice top, cut a few slits in the top on the pie crust for air to escape.
Beat an egg together and using a pastry brush, brush the exposed crust.
Create a dome with a large piece of foil. Fold the foil in half and gently crease, then completely cover the pie and place in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to cook until the crust is golden brown, about 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to slightly cool before serving.
Garnish this mouthwatering apple pie with ice cream, whipped cream, heavy cream or sharp cheddar cheese and share with your family and friends.
